Quantum Theory

Preview: Quantum Theory (PS3)

Tecmo have built a reputation for formidable experiences but have always resisted the temptation to feature a shooter element, until now that is. Quantum Theory is not only their newest intellectual property but also their first foray into the third person shooter genre.

Earth has been obliterated by the final conflict that has almost wiped out the human race. All that remains are a few survivors who are clinging to what little life they have left in a new community known as Cocoon, built amidst the ruins of the old civilisation. Thankfully Quantum Theory is no relation of the Ron Howard film, although rejuvenated geriatric warriors might well be a new genre worth exploring another time. Instead a new threat to Cocoon’s inhabitants has arisen, known as Erosion this black material is pure evil and manifests itself via a living tower that you must destroy. A virus known as Diabolisis has been infecting survivors and transforming them into monsters.

Taking the role of a fearsomely named warrior known as Syd, you will have assistance on your quest as you attempt to circumnavigate the tower, but as with most Tecmo releases there is no co-operative option. Upon entering the tower you are joined by Filena, a warrior with her own agenda for reaching the summit of the building. There is no party control function, but she will assist you and hopefully avoid any Goldeneye moments of getting in the way.

The environment is always changing shape and throwing new challenges at you on the battlefield, which you must overcome. The weaponry on offer is rooted in the modern era and quite generic for a third person shooter including a machine gun, sniper rifle, bazooka and pistol. Online options will include multiplayer and team combat, which should remain popular long after the story mode is complete. Filena and other characters will be available for selection online as well and should provide some variety to combat as she is far more petite and fluid than Syd.

Tecmo whilst new to this type of game have called upon their experience to ensure Quantum Theory is no straightforward adventure. Some of the toughest yet most rewarding titles Gamestyle has played in recent times have come from this studio in the form of Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive. This challenging game play is set to feature once again albeit in a new guise, which is great news but we are concerned about the inclusion of platform elements and the AI still requires work along the frame rate.

The influence of Gears of War is very apparent in the meaty presentation and graphic violence. Set against a dark fantasy world Quantum Theory will have its work cut out to establish itself in a formidable genre, but will be assisted due to its PS3 exclusive status.

Review: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii)

The graphics and sound are excellent by the standards of a third-party Wii game.

Review: Heavy Rain (PS3)

Although Heavy Rain is entertaining from the start, there are several flaws that hamper the enjoyment.

Review: Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (NDS)

A very endearing entry in the series, and another that is well worth checking out.

BioShock 2 Strategy Guide Review

The first thing you notice when you get this guide in your hands is the quality.

Review: Aliens vs. Predator (PS3)

The control gripes aside, Aliens vs Predator is a good game.
