Resistance 2

Preview: Resistance 2 (PS3)

The first Resistance appeared at the launch of the PS3 and was a huge hit with fans and critics. Gamestyle awarded it a 9 praising the game for its inventive use of weaponry and clever enemy attack patterns. It was a breath of fresh air in a rather lacklustre PS3 launch line-up. Now it won’t be long before we do battle with the Chimera once more in one of our most anticipated PS3 titles of the year.

Bigger is better certainly should be used to describe Nathan Hales next adventure. With bigger battles promised as well as spectacular landscapes and a more gripping narrative, Insomniac seem to be pushing themselves to the limit in only their second stab at the FPS genre. What we know so far is that the story now shifts from the European battlefield and ventures overseas to the States where a besieged 1950’s America is crumbling. You only need look at the videos to get a sense of the scale. One moment in particular had you on the run from a giant Godzilla sized monster. It makes the month long wait almost unbearable. Little more is really known about the campaign, and perhaps this is for the best, that way we can explore the world at a more leisurely pace, discovering new environments and watching the plot unfold. After all, so much about our protagonist was left unanswered at the end of the first Resistance.

Not content with just offering a better single player, multi-player is getting an upgrade as well. Up to eight players can join forces in co-op mode in levels primarily designed for team based combat. On top of that you can just blow each other up if you so choose in staggering deathmatch modes which manage to hold up to sixty players. If the connection speeds manage to stay at a reasonable pace then Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 certainly have some major competition.

While we’ve been disappointed before when it comes to major Christmas releases, Resistance 2 is certainly shaping up to be one of the big hitters, but with so many titles released in the same period, will it get lost in the shuffle? We seriously doubt it.

Review: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii)

The graphics and sound are excellent by the standards of a third-party Wii game.

Review: Heavy Rain (PS3)

Although Heavy Rain is entertaining from the start, there are several flaws that hamper the enjoyment.

Review: Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (NDS)

A very endearing entry in the series, and another that is well worth checking out.

Review: Aliens vs. Predator (PS3)

The control gripes aside, Aliens vs Predator is a good game.
